We had a great time at the Ratstravaganza over the weekend!

It was a small show but lots of wonderful people were there and visited and we raised almost $400 for ratties and ferrets in need!

A previous adopter stopped by who lost his last rat in April which was really hard on him and he wasn't sure if he could go through the heartbreak again but he ended up adopting 4 including Joey & Cupid who have been with us the longest.

Another previous adopter fell in love with a little baby girl and vice versa. The baby rattie was totally smitten with her and didn't want to leave her mom. It was so awesome to see the instant love connection these two had!

2 more ratties went home but we already knew it ahead of time so they were just picked up.

It was awesome to see how it was almost a whole family affair with people who adopted rats that came from the same group e.g. littermates and everybody was sharing how they were doing.

Unfortunately we didn't do well in the pea eating contest, we gotta train better for next year. We did get several ribbons for rescue stories though!

Carrie

Carrie was one of 3 girls we adopted in August of 2007. They were only 4 months old and had been part of a breeder seizure of 50+ rats. They had a rough start to life, but had been fostered in an awesome foster home so were very well socialized. We'd never had young rats, female rats, or well socialized rats, so this was a new experience for me.

Carrie is over a year old now and is doing very well. She's got a very unique personality. She's got 2 neutered brothers, who she lovingly beats up every single day. They're twice her size, but they're smart enough to let her win because Carrie is very tenacious. She's also the cleverest of our rats. She outsmarts everybody in their big cage in order to get all the best food. Carrie loves to explore with her sister Angela and is often the ringleader in causing mischief somewhere. She's also completely beautiful!

Mica

I have posted a lot about Mica lately, but she's just such an amazing rat, she deserves to be mentioned here. She was the momma who was stray in Victoria and gave birth to 10 babies 2 days after being rescued. She is missing an eye, had a fractured leg, and a bunch of bite wounds which became infected. Her babies are all leaving to go to their new homes and Mica will be leaving me in a few days to go to her adoptive home. I will really miss her. She is an incredibly gentle girl, who has been so patient while I flushed out her wounds every day. I'm happy to report that she's healing up well. Her abscess has dried up and her fur has grown back over all the wounds. She will probably always limp, but it doesn't slow her down at all. I wish her a long happy life with her new family!

Izzy, George, and Joe

These are Mica's 3 boys who we adopted. They are 6 weeks old now and doing awesome. They're friendly, curious, and quick! They have already been introduced for a quick visit with my other adult rats and they did great. It's amazing to have watched them grow from 2 days old. They learn so quickly and get bigger by the day. It is a new experience to have critters here who I know from their first breath have been treated properly, have always had good food, and have been loved. These boys will have a good life here full of treats and as much cuddling as they can possibly tolerate ;-)

To celebrate our Pink Is Beautiful campaign, I thought I'd post the stories of the PEW rats that have touched my life since I got involved with rat rescue. They have been some of my most special rats and they were actually the first rats I had!

Harry, Herman & Howie

I met these boys in the spring of 2006 while I was volunteering at the Victoria SPCA. They had been at the shelter for nearly a year after their previous owner surrendered them when he didn't have the time for them any more. Because they were similar looking PEW rats, they were overlooked again and again in the shelter. I'd never met rats before, and these 3 were quite big so I was a bit afraid of them at first, which was silly because they were incredibly gentle!

I mostly kept my distance from the rats while I was at the shelter until one day they snuck into my backpack and stole all my stuff when I wasn't looking. I looked down into the rat cage and saw the corner of a receipt sticking out of the rats' bed! I moved their blanket and found my pen and papers all hidden in their bed too. This pretty much sealed it that these rats needed to come live with us. We got rid of our TV to make space for another cage and the boys came to live with us in August 2006.

These 3 rats were incredible! They were so affectionate and loyal. They loved to cuddle, and would brux and boggle instantly when I held them. Sadly, we only had a year before they started to get quite sick and pass away. We lost Herman first, then Howie a few months later, and Harry a few months after that. It was heartbreaking to lose these guys so soon. I have so many good memories of these boys, though, and I couldn't ask for more amazing first ratties.

Harry, Herman & Howie

Rolo

I met Rolo and his brother Wrigley in the Spring of 2007. A friend who does small animal rescue up-island had taken these 2 boys in when their owner couldn't look after them any more. They were both seniors in failing health and my friend had never had rats before. We went to visit and the boys settled in our arms so easily, we knew it was probably meant to be.

Rolo was over 2 years old by the time we got him and he had severe bumblefoot as well as 2 tumors, and paralysis in his back legs. We treated the bumblefoot the best we could, but it never went away completely. Despite all his troubles Rolo still had a lot of happiness. He loved to eat snacks, and when I would help him groom and give him a nice soft bed he was so happy! He loved his brother Wrigley a lot too, so it was really sad when Wrigley passed away suddenly.

I introduced Rolo to Harry and Howie after Herman passed away and the 3 boys were the best of friends. Rolo was always shy with me, and got a lot more out of the company of rats. I was really glad my 2 boys were so good to him. Rolo's health slowly deteriorated until he was suffering and we had to put him to sleep. I was so glad to have given him a real comfy retirement time, but it was sad to once again lose a rat so soon.
