We're already dealing with our second unwanted litter of rats this year and it's only mid February!

We would like to take this opportunity to remind everybody to please spay and neuter your pets!

I recently adopted the first two rats Little Mischief Rescue officially took in. The boys were born in August of 2007 and were from an unwanted litter. They were taken into quarantine late in 2007 and came to their forever home on January 6, 2008. We decided to call the boys Dexter and Ernest.

I originally planned to bond the boys with my 3 spayed females and move everybody into our big Ruud cage. The bonding process didn't go as smoothly as planned, though, and the boys ended up being neutered before we could introduce them to the girls.

It took a lot of time and patience, but the boys are now living happily with our girls. The boys were really shy with me at first, but they've really come a long way. They're happy, dorky, social guys now. Dexter is really goofy and good-natured (now that he's neutered) and Ernest is very sweet and affectionate with people and rats alike. My female rats were not very happy to have roommates at first, but they've become best buds with Dexter and Ernest in just a few weeks. They all sleep in a heap together.

I'm so happy to have found these boys and to have given them their home for life. Rescues #1 and 2 had a very happy ending!

Year of the Rat

Though the Western rat is reviled as little more than a bottom-dwelling disease carrier, this animal is viewed much differently in the East. The Eastern rat is revered for its quick wits and its ability to accrue and hold on to items of value; rats are considered a symbol of good luck and wealth in both China and Japan.

2008 is the year of the rat and we here at Little Mischief are thrilled that one of our favorite animals gets to shine this year!

Rats make wonderful pets but please do your research before getting a pair to make sure that it will be a lifelong commitment and that the rats will get the proper care they need and deserve.
