Batman just arrived today in rescue.

A caring person rescued him and 5 other rats from a very neglectful situation. They were housed in a basement on ceder bedding and received next to no care.

The person found a home for the 3 girls and is ok with the pair of males but needed help with Batman, the single hairless male who is in need of vet care as his eyes are in horrible shape. The previous owner said that his eyes have been swollen for quite some time but he had no money for vet care. Without vet care, the situation just worsened and now this poor little guy is suffering. Don't get a pet if you can't afford the vet!

WARNING - THE PICTURES ARE GRAPHIC!!!
Only click on the links below if you are ok with that.

Thanks to Pacific Coastal we were able to fly him to Vancouver today so that he can see our wonderful vets over here.

We are not sure if there's any hope of saving his eyes but we will know more after our vets have looked at him.

Please send some good thoughts his way!

We recently received a happy update from Dana in Oak Harbor,WA who adopted Tundra, Sahara & Kalahari, 3 of Savannah's baby girls who came into rescue as newborn babies in January 2009. The three girls have new names now which we of course don't mind:

Here's another update on the ratties. I can't believe they were 11 months old yesterday! How in the world did that happen?

They're doing really well. They love the wheel, though Havy and Sage hog it so Kal doesn't get to run very much. As a result she's getting a bit puggy. We weighed them earlier today: Havy was a little over 12oz, Sage is about 13½oz, and Kal's 14oz. We're going to work out a way to get her more exercise.

They love guests, especially Havy. It's interesting to see how each one reacts to new people: Havy is pretty calm and explores the new people without prompting, Kal prefers to crawl from one of us to the new people and back to us until she's figured them out. Then she accepts them and crawls over them in her usual super-speed explore mode. Sage is pretty reserved, checking them out from a distance before deciding to venture over. Once she's decided they're all right she's the most polite of the three, mostly sitting on a lap or shoulder.

These are their moods to us, too, although it's really apparent to see with new people. Havy accepted me almost immediately when we brought her home. Kal was alright with me at first but really wormed up after a couple days, and Sage I've only just started to truly get to know.

They enjoy all their treats - even carrots, I'm told. I haven't actually witnessed this, but I can believe it. They especially enjoy cooked grains mixed with vegetables. After we have anything with rice or quinoa we'll give them the serving spoon after dinner. Tonight I thought Havy was going to eat that, too.

As always, I've got pictures: First, one of Kal. It was one of the few times she actually managed to get a turn on the wheel and she was determined to keep it all for herself.

The next two are both Havy. She's such a silly girl.

Then Havy and Sage together in a Kleenex box - they really love those things.

I imagine I'll be sending plenty of Christmas pictures in a month. Each of them has a stocking on the tree, ready to be filled with nuts and raisins. They should have a good first Christmas.

I'll try to send you another update once Christmas is over and they've had their one year birthday.

Have a good holiday season, Dana

Frankie was found as a stray in Kelowna and was taken in by Kelly who was already fostering a guinea pig named Bill. Bill and Frankie quickly bonded.

Frankie was the most beautiful chocolate colored piglet. A big boy weighing in at 1.5 kg. Just a big sweetheart.

Unfortunately Frankie was recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure and he lost his battle last night.

RIP sweet boy

Poor Bill is now all alone again. He'd really like a home with another male or spayed female guinea pig. Please get in touch with us if you are interested in adopting him. He's a really sweet boy who deserves a home of his own.

Aka Santa Bunny

Piper is a sweet little girl. She is white with black spots, most likely a Hotot/Dwarf mix. She is only about a year old and has good potty manners. She is not spayed yet but will be after the holidays.

She likes to sit with you on the couch and watch the world go by. She is ok with being handled and is good with the kids in the foster family. She is also ok with respectful, bunny savvy cats. We tried to have her move in with a group of rabbits but she was not impressed. This could change in the months after her spay as her hormones settle down but we can't predict her behavior.

Piper was an owner surrender. She is now looking for a forever home!

Rabbits are very misunderstood creatures, so please make sure you do a lot of research to make sure a rabbit is the right pet for you! They are a 8-12 year commitment! Our favorite website is House Rabbit Society

December is sure starting to turn into one depressing month :-(

Itchy and Scratchy came to us from our partner rescue Washington Ferret Rescue in Kirkland, WA. They sat at their shelter for a year with no interest so we offered to take them in and give them the luxury of being in a caring foster home.

These guys were in the foster program, but because of their age no one was really interested in them. They were very sweet and loved each other dearly.

A few months ago we noticed that both girls started to decline and decided we would keep them in rescue for the rest of their lives and spoil them rotten each and every day.

A few weeks ago they moved in with Teresa and Markus who provide hospice care to a number of ferrets.

On Friday night they had to make an emergency trip to Dr. Walton at midnight as Itchy was starting to crash. She had been battling a tumor for some time, but she had nothing left to fight with. She was put down that night.

Today, we had to let her sister, Scratchy go too as her tumor was starting to take over as well.

RIP Itchy & Scratchy

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Adrian Walton at the Dewdney Animal Hospital in Maple Ridge for taking such good care of our rescue ferrets! Dr. Walton is going beyond the call of duty and jumped out of bed on Friday night when Itchy started to crash to meet us at the clinic. We are extremely grateful to have such a dedicated vet on our side!
