From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a rat," or, "that's a lot of money for just a rat." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a rat."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a rat." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a rat," but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a rat," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a rat" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a rat," then you will probably understand phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a rat" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.

"Just a rat" brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person.

Because of "just a rat", I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a rat" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

"Just a rat" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a rat", but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man or woman." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a rat", just smile -- because they "just don't understand."

Molly came to LMR via a local shelter in June 2009. She came in with her two daughters. We also took in "her husband" and two sons (in a separate cage of course).

After just a few weeks in rescue, Molly developed mammary tumors. We had them removed and had her spayed at the same time. Her daughters Ginny and Hermione were spayed about a month later.

Despite them being beautiful girls and spayed, they never found a forever home. The animals have it very good here in rescue but we want nothing more for them than for them to find their perfect forever home and when that doesn't happen it breaks our hearts.

We removed the girls off the website a few weeks ago as Molly and one of her daughters have chronic respiratory issues and it just wouldn't be fair to move at their age and in their condition.

In the past few weeks Molly took a turn for the worse. We had her on several different meds both for respiratory issues and heart issues but she just didn't get any better. She wasn't having any fun anymore and so we made the hard decision to let her go. Molly was a good girl and will be missed.

Wilma made a lucky escape from Alberta a few weeks ago (you can re-read her story here)

Wilma found a fantastic forever home just across the border in WA. She officially went home almost 2 weeks ago after her quarantine was over.

She has a few new girlfriends now and is fitting in nicely!

Her new family sent us this super cute picture of Wilma and two of her girlfriends after a bath:
